Types of Industrial Chillers: Air-Cooled & Water-Cooled Chillers
There are two types of condensers used in chillers: water-cooled and air-cooled. In a refrigerant cycle, the hot freon from the compressor has to be cooled in the condenser. And then, it enters the expression valve into the evaporator to generate chilled water in the chiller and achieve the desired cooling cycle.
Air-Cooled Chillers
An air-cooled chiller is equipped with a condenser that uses ambient air to cool the hot refrigerant gas. It is usually installed in an area with good airflow, as it relies on the use of fans, instead of cooling towers, to facilitate heat dissipation. An air-cooled chiller unit actively absorbs the heat from the processed water and then transfers this heat into the air.
Water-Cooled Chillers
A water-cooled chiller is equipped with a condenser that uses water from a cooling tower to cool the refrigerant gas. After the refrigerant is cooled and released via an extension valve, it will cool down the water that circulates in the chiller and reach the target temperature. In other words, the processed water works as a medium for heat transfers.

Maintenance Methods of Industrial Chillers
The protection device settings of the industrial chiller unit have been set by the manufacturer, and users should not modify it at will.
Regularly check whether the cooling water system of the chiller is normal, whether the cooling tower fan and sprinkler shaft are running well, and whether the water supply of the built-in water tank of the chiller is normal. Regularly check the chiller for refrigerant leakage: you can refer to the parameters displayed on the high and low pressure meters on the front panel of the host to determine.
When the unit fails to alarm and stop, you should press the alarm stop button first, and then check the cause of the failure. Remember not to start the machine forcibly before troubleshooting.
If it is not an emergency situation during use, do not turn off the unit by cutting off the power supply at random; if the unit is stopped for a long time in winter, turn off the unit first, then turn off the main power supply, and drain the water in the chiller.
Use industrial chillers to keep the machine room clean and well ventilated, and regularly clean the condenser to ensure the normal operation of the unit.
For the air-cooled chiller, check whether the rotation of the fan is correct after starting. If the rotation is normal, it can be used normally. If it is reversed, the power wiring is reversed, and the phase sequence must be replaced before starting. Also ensure a good heat dissipation effect, which should keep the surface of the cooling coil of the chiller clean, ensure the air circulation around the machine, the temperature is low, and clean the cooling coil regularly.
The water-cooled chiller should keep the cooling water tower clean, keep the air circulation and temperature around the water tower low, and prevent debris from entering the cooling water tower to reduce heat dissipation efficiency.
The system should be cleaned when the chiller is used for six months, and it should be cleaned once a year. The main cleaning parts include: cooling water tower, heat dissipation water pipe and condenser part to ensure better cooling effect. If the chiller is used for more than 6 months, the dehumidifier or the high / low pressure switch often fails, or the cooling capacity is reduced. This requires professional maintenance personnel to repair it.

To achieve process thermoregulation (aka to cool industrial plants down) most companies use a mix of water and glycol. The water comes from nearby natural sources like lakes and rivers. If this water doesn' t get filtered, it brings sand, silt, and other particulates into the system with it.
Coolant fluid that isn' t filtered will shorten the life of your industrial chiller by causing corrosion, mineral buildup, and clogging. A proper filtration system is designed to remove these contaminants before they ever have a chance to cause problems.
Clogged and corroded pipes from contaminated fluid decrease your coolers' capacity and can even shut the process down altogether. It' s expensive and time-consuming-not to mention frustrating.
The bottom line is that it' s just not worth the risk to use unfiltered water in your industrial chiller. A good filtration system will save you money and headaches in the long run.
Parts of an Industrial Chiller
Industrial chillers share similar components with smaller chillers but are designed to be more robust and dynamic to handle the demands of cooling large equipment and continuous operation. Like other chillers, industrial chillers are categorized based on their condensers, which can be either air-cooled or water-cooled.
Evaporator
In the evaporator of an industrial water chiller, heat boils the refrigerant and changes it from a liquid to a gas to be sent on to the compressor. The key to the process is the pressure under which the vapor leaves the evaporator.
Compressor
The most common type of compressor for industrial chillers are scroll compressors, which work by compressing the refrigerant between spiral plates with one plate being stationary while the other one orbits. As the orbit plate swirls, the trapped gas is forced into a small space and exits through the compressor' s center outlet. Large industrial chillers may have multiple scroll compressors for a single industrial water chiller for redundancy, efficiency, and the handling of heavy loads.
Condenser
The condenser of an industrial chiller is responsible for removing heat from the high pressure and high temperature refrigerant vapor by functioning like a heat exchanger. It efficiently makes the phase transition of the refrigerant from a vapor to a liquid, which makes it possible for the refrigerant to fit into the water chiller cycle.
Expansion Valve
The liquid refrigerant moves from the condenser to expansion valves where the pressure of the refrigerant is reduced before being sprayed into the evaporator. The pressure drop cools the refrigerant. When the capacity of the evaporator increases, the expansion valve releases more refrigerant into the evaporator. As the capacity decreases, the expansion valve releases less refrigerant. Additionally, the expansion valve maintains the pressure difference between the condenser, which is at high pressure, and the evaporator that is at low pressure.
